ACT and Commonwealth NPM joint guidance materials for visitors to ACT Policing facilities
Today, the ACT and Commonwealth NPM’s have jointly published Guidance Material: ACT Watch House and Police Stations.
The document provides guidance to our visiting teams in their joint role of monitoring places of detention under control of the Australian Federal Police within the ACT jurisdiction.
The document is organised into 6 categories:
- Material Conditions
- Procedural Safeguards
- Healthcare
- Safety, Order, Discipline and Restrictive Practices,
- Transportation, and
- Leadership and Staffing.
Under each category heading are expectations, indicators and standards that visitors can use to help them identify what to turn their minds to when forming views during visits.
The development of this guidance is underpinned by domestic legislation and international human rights standards and has benefited from the work of other oversight bodies.
This is an evolving document and will be updated in response to feedback as well as changes in local, national, and international best practice.
